| The Story: |
The day
before school starts, Mama takes her five little monkeys shopping
for clothes. “Stay right here.” she says. “AND
DON’T GO WANDERING OFF!” But do those silly little
monkeys listen to Mama? Of course not! Soon there are only three
little monkeys . . . but wait, now there are seven . . . then three
again . . . and then . . . oh, no! Fourteen little monkeys! How
can that be? Will Mama ever have her five little monkeys together
again?

| Where did you get the idea?: |
This is the seventh book
in the Five Little Monkey series. I wasn’t planning to write
another book about the monkeys; but as I was playing with various
story ideas, I found myself writing about the monkeys going shopping.
I soon realized that the story could be a good vehicle for introducing
more monkeys and bigger numbers. As I was working on the first
draft, a teacher and her kindergarten e-mailed me with a request:
bigger “number words”. I was able to reply, “I’m
working on it!”

The illustrations:
The illustrations were done using Adobe Photoshop 7 and a Wacom tablet. I delivered
the art to my publisher on a DVD. In the past I’ve always sent off
large package of original art, holding my breath until it arrived safely
at Clarion.
